Amazon Basics Hardside Luggage Review: How Did It Hold Up After 9 Months of Slow Travel?

If you've spent any time in slow-travel groups online, you've probably seen the same advice repeated over and over: spend $300–$500 on good luggage or you'll regret it. Premium luggage is even more costly.

We decided to put that to the test.

My wife and I picked up a set of Amazon Basics Hardside Luggage in 2025. We started slow travelling in September of that year — not a quick vacation, but a real, extended slow-travel trip with all the cobblestones, train stations, cruise ports, and overloaded suitcases that comes with it.

Here's what we actually found.

How We Really Tested Amazon Basics Luggage

We didn't go easy on these bags. While we've stayed in some locations for weeks at a time, we've been travelling every 4–6 nights to a new destination for the past several months. Because the trip crossed multiple seasons, we packed heavily — the large 30-inch bag hit around 57 lbs, and the 26-inch came in around 48 lbs. That's a lot to ask of budget hardside luggage.

Did They Hold Up?

Honestly? Better than we expected.

The zippers never gave us a moment of trouble — even stuffed to the brim. The handles felt a little flimsy right out of the box, but once loaded up they were surprisingly sturdy. The hard shell picked up plenty of scuffs and scrapes (airport baggage handlers are not gentle), but nothing cracked or dented.

One thing worth knowing: these bags don't come with built-in TSA locks. We actually prefer it that way — we use our own separate locks, so if one ever jams, it's an easy fix without messing with the whole bag.

The Inside Is Basic — But That's Fine

The interior is pretty no-frills: a zip divider, one long pocket, and two mesh pockets. One of the mesh pockets eventually tore after we snagged it with something hard. Nothing major, but worth mentioning.

Our workaround? Don't rely on the interior pockets much at all. We use packing cubes to keep everything organized inside, and they work beautifully.

A Few Quirks We Actually Learned to Love

These bags have a couple of quirks that might sound odd, but we ended up appreciating them:

• They roll at an angle. On smooth floors, the bags tend to track slightly sideways rather than perfectly straight. It sounds annoying, but in crowded train stations it actually helped — the bag works almost like a plow.
• They tip onto their side easily. The way the wheels sit, you can roll the bag right onto its side and slide it into a train luggage rack or the back of an SUV — less strain manipulating them into tight spaces.
• You can use the expansion zipper strategically. We used it to fit our winter gear, but once expanded, the bag gets a little floppy at the bottom. We found that zipping the lower part of the expander back up kept the base firm and made it much easier to roll long distances.

The One Thing You Absolutely Must Do

Buy silicone wheel covers. Seriously — don't skip this.

European cobblestones are brutal on hard plastic wheels. Before our first day out, we put silicone wheel covers on both bags, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Over four months, the cobblestones chewed through several sets of covers — but the actual wheels underneath? Still perfect. The covers took all the punishment. They're cheap, and they'll save your wheels. A pack slides flat along the edge of your suitcase — lightweight and completely out of the way.

So, Are They Worth It?

For us, absolutely yes.

Here's the simple math: you could buy this same luggage set three to five times over for the price of one premium bag. And if an airline ever damages or loses a bag, Amazon can ship a replacement almost anywhere in the world within a few days — try getting that turnaround from a luxury brand's warranty department.

We gave these bags everything we had for 9 months. They are still travelling with us and have had zero issues. That's all we needed to know.

Budget hardside luggage for slow travel? It works — as long as you protect the wheels.
