Welcome back to The Engineered Escape! As we map out our travel strategy for next year's adventures in Asia, making sure our budget goes toward experiences rather than airline fees is a top priority. My wife and I recently added the Bank of America Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® card to our wallets, and the math on this one made it a completely worthwhile addition.
If you are planning an overseas journey, especially one that requires checking luggage, here is why this card might be a great fit for your own travel strategy.
The Welcome Offer We Took
When we opened the card, it came with a welcome bonus of 70,000 bonus points and a $99 Companion Fare (plus taxes and fees starting at $23) after spending $2,500 on purchases within the first 90 days of opening the account.
Update, October 27, 2026: the offer has changed. As of today Bank of America is advertising 50,000 bonus points, so check the terms before you apply. See the current offer on Bank of America's site. This is not a referral link, and we don't have one for this card.
We managed to cover the vast majority of that $2,500 spend requirement just by purchasing our upcoming tickets. Because points in this ecosystem can be leveraged for partner flights, those 70,000 points are highly valuable and will easily cover at least one reward ticket to Japan for a future trip. At the new 50,000-point level, expect the bonus to go less far.
Why the $95 Annual Fee Pays for Itself
We are always cautious about adding cards with annual fees, but the Atmos Rewards Ascent comes with a $95 annual fee that is incredibly easy to offset. The primary reason we applied was the baggage perk.
When you use the card to pay for your flights, you get a free checked bag and preferred boarding for yourself and up to 6 guests on the same reservation. Between the two of us, dodging those checked bag fees on our journey to Asia completely wipes out the cost of holding the card for the year.
Other Notable Perks
Beyond the generous sign-up bonus and baggage waivers, the card has some great everyday earning multipliers to help fuel future slow travel:
- 3x points on eligible airline purchases.
- 2x points on gas, EV charging, local transit (including rideshares), cable, and streaming services.
- 1x points on all other purchases.
- 10% rewards bonus on all earned points if you happen to hold an eligible Bank of America checking or savings account.
- No blackout dates when booking flights with points or the companion fare on eligible flights.
The Bottom Line
Whether you're gearing up for a major trip across the Pacific or just want to minimize the friction of domestic baggage fees, the baggage perks alone make the Atmos Rewards Ascent card worth a look, though the welcome bonus is smaller than the one we took.
