Calculator
An estimate, not advice. This counts days against published rules. Rules change at short notice and border officers decide who is admitted, so always confirm with the official source for your passport before you travel.
How the numbers work
The Schengen 90/180 rule is a rolling window, not a calendar block. On any day, look back 180 days including that day and count the days you were inside the Schengen Area. That total must never pass 90. Days drop out of the back of the window as time passes, which is why the calculator can tell you the earliest date you can come back for a trip of a given length.
Most other countries here give you a fresh allowance each time you enter: Japan 90 days for US and Australian passports, Thailand 30 days, Malaysia 90 days. Those are counted from the day you arrive, and each trip you add gets its own count. For the Philippines and Indonesia, which allow extensions, tick the box on a trip once an extension has been granted. Singapore and Mexico set the number of days at the counter, so you enter the days on your stamp.
Japan also has a total-days limit. Each entry allows up to 90 days, and the Embassy of Japan in Sweden states that a Temporary Visitor is only allowed to stay in Japan for a total of 180 days during a 12-month period. Japanese immigration specialists describe the 12 months as counted back from your departure date, so the calculator checks your last 365 days at each departure, planned trips included. We have not found the rule in Japan's immigration law itself, so confirm with Japan's Immigration Services Agency for your case. Thailand has no total-days limit, but looks closely at repeated short out-and-back trips, so the calculator flags those as a pattern, which is guidance and not an official rule.
Every rule shows when it was last checked and links to the official pages it was checked against. If a rule is not listed, we have not verified it yet and would rather leave it out than guess.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Schengen 90/180 rule work?+
With a US, UK or Australian passport you can spend up to 90 days in the Schengen Area in any rolling 180-day period. The window moves forward every day, looking back 180 days from that day, and all Schengen countries share one count. Your entry day and your exit day both count as days spent.
Is there a limit on total days in Japan?+
Yes for Japan. Each entry allows up to 90 days for US and Australian passports, and the Embassy of Japan in Sweden states that a Temporary Visitor is only allowed to stay in Japan for a total of 180 days during a 12-month period. Japanese immigration specialists describe the 12 months as counted back from your departure date and warn that going over can lead to refused entry on a later trip. We have not found the rule in Japan's immigration law itself, so confirm with Japan's Immigration Services Agency. Thailand has no total-days limit, but repeated short exits are a pattern that can draw scrutiny, and the calculator flags them.
Do the entry and exit days count?+
Yes, for the Schengen 90/180 rule and for the per-entry allowances in this calculator. If you arrive on the 1st and leave on the 10th, that is 10 days.
Which countries and passports does it cover?+
US, UK and Australian passports, for the Schengen Area, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Mexico and, for US and Australian passports, the CA-4 countries. A rule appears only after we have checked it against official government sources.
Are my dates saved or sent anywhere?+
No. The calculation runs in your browser and your dates are never sent to us. The trips you enter are remembered on your own device so you do not have to retype them, and the Clear all button removes them.
Is this legal or immigration advice?+
No. It counts days against publicly published rules. Rules change at short notice and border officers decide who is admitted, so confirm with the official source for your passport before you travel.
Rules change, and we would rather hear about it. If a limit looks out of date, a result looks wrong, or you would like a country or a feature added, email info@theengineeredescape.com. For a problem, tell us your passport, where you were going and the trips you entered. The Copy summary button above puts all of that on your clipboard.
