Google Fi Cut Off Our International Data — Here's How We're Fixing Our Family Plan

The Plan That's Worked for Years — Until Now

We've been on Google Fi for a while now, and for the most part, it's been the right call. Four lines for the two of us and our adult kids, roughly $160/month total, solid coverage in cities and along the interstates. Fi leans on T-Mobile's network (with some backup from US Cellular), and honestly, it's been fine for 90% of what we do. The one soft spot is rural and remote coverage. As former AT&T customers, Fi has always been a step behind what AT&T used to give us.

That tradeoff was easy to live with. What wasn't easy to live with is a rule buried in Fi's terms of service that we didn't think much about until it hit us directly.

The Catch Nobody Reads Until It's a Problem

Google Fi's terms require the service to be used "primarily" in the US. If the majority of your usage happens outside the US over a rolling 90-day period, Fi sends a warning around the 50-day mark of extended travel, and international data gets suspended roughly 30 days after that warning. Once it's suspended, calls and texts keep working, but data does not — and it stays that way until Fi sees significant US usage for at least 30 consecutive days.

We found this out the hard way. We were traveling for four months this year, well past the point where Fi considers usage "extended." We got the warning, our international data was suspended, and now that we're back on the West Coast for a couple of weeks, we don't have enough runway to hit the 30-day US reset before we're wheels-up again.

The wrinkle that makes this sting a little more: this policy currently only affects our international data, not our US data or our calls and texts. Everything works normally while we're stateside, and calls/texts keep working internationally the entire time, suspension or not. It's specifically international data that's off the table until we complete a full 30-day US stretch, which isn't happening on this trip.

We also each have a Pixel Watch with cellular service, added to our Fi plan for $5/month per watch ($10/month total). Those came with the same restriction, and it turns out watches are a separate headache we'll get to below.

What We're Actually Comparing

Once you're in "fix this now" mode, there are basically three paths:

  1. Stay on Google Fi and just eat the international data gap until we bank 30 continuous days back in the US.
  2. Switch the whole family to T-Mobile directly, since Fi already rides on T-Mobile's towers.
  3. Keep Fi exactly as it is for US service, and layer on local eSIMs (we're looking at Saily) for data whenever we're abroad.

Here's how those actually stack up, based on current published pricing for our setup — four lines, two of them with cellular watches:

On the T-Mobile side: $215/mo with autopay is a promotional rate off a $280/mo list price, part of a "3rd line free"-style promo. It's worth asking T-Mobile directly how long that promo holds before you commit — reverting to list price would make the monthly gap versus Fi considerably bigger than it looks today.

Calls and Texts Stay on Fi

One thing worth being clear on: the suspension only touches data. Our Fi numbers keep working for calls and texts internationally the whole time, suspension or not. So the plan while traveling is to keep the Fi eSIM active on our phones for calls, texts, and US data when we're back, and add a Saily eSIM alongside it purely for data while we're abroad. Our phones support running both eSIMs at once (most current iPhones and Pixels do), so there's no swapping SIMs or juggling — Fi handles voice/text, Saily handles data, same phone, same number, the whole time.

The Watch Problem We Almost Missed

This is the part worth flagging loudly: Pixel Watch cellular service isn't a standalone eSIM the way a phone's is. It's a "number-share" eSIM tied to your actual carrier plan — Fi, in our case — the same way an Apple Watch Cellular line works. It can't just accept a random travel eSIM the way our phones can.

Saily's own device-compatibility notes are blunt about this: their eSIMs are built for phones, and compatibility with tablets and smartwatches "is not assured." So even if we solve our phones' international data with a Saily eSIM, our watches would still be sitting on Fi's suspended international data with no independent fix. Practically, that means the watches lose cellular data entirely while we're abroad until the 30-day US reset happens, regardless of which path we pick for the phones. Worth knowing before you assume an eSIM fixes everything at once.

Why We're Leaning Toward the eSIM Route

For us, switching carriers entirely doesn't pencil out. We don't need new phones, so we'd miss out on the trade-in incentives that usually make a T-Mobile switch worth it. We don't want to risk our numbers, even temporarily, during a carrier change. And we really don't want to drag our kids' lines into a new plan structure over a problem that's only ours — they're not the ones leaving the country for months at a time.

Layering local eSIMs onto our existing Fi lines keeps everything else untouched: our numbers, our kids' plan, our $160/month baseline. It costs us extra only when we're actually traveling, and only for the data we're actually using. The tradeoff is that it's a manual step before every trip (buy the eSIM, install it, make sure data roaming and APN settings are right), and it doesn't touch the underlying Fi suspension, which will keep resetting the clock every time we leave for an extended stretch. If Fi's "primarily in the US" rule becomes something we're bumping into every year, we may eventually decide the T-Mobile switch is worth the higher monthly cost just to stop thinking about it. For now, though, eSIMs solve the actual problem — international data — without touching anything else.

A Quick Security Note

One more thing worth mentioning: whenever you hop onto a Saily eSIM, you're riding on whatever local network Saily has partnered with in that country, not the network you're used to at home. That's normal and fine, but it's a good habit to run a VPN in the background any time you're on unfamiliar mobile networks or public Wi-Fi abroad — it keeps your traffic encrypted regardless of whose towers you're bouncing off of. The Bottom Line

If you travel internationally for weeks at a time on Google Fi, know this ahead of your next long trip: Fi's international data isn't unlimited in the way it feels like it should be. There's a rolling usage window, a suspension, and a 30-day US reset that doesn't care how long your trip was supposed to be. Budget for it, or budget around it.

For us, the fix wasn't a full carrier switch. It was keeping Fi for what it does well (cheap, reliable US service for four lines) and adding local eSIMs for what it currently can't do for us (unlimited international travel). The one thing we can't route around yet is the watches — those stay dark on international data until we've logged a full 30 days back on US soil.
