We're an American couple who left our careers in our early 50s to slow travel the world. No rushed itineraries, no ticking off bucket lists. Just long stays in places we actually want to be, funded largely by points and miles. We're now setting up a base camp in Otaru, on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, a second home we'll return to for a few months at a time.
This site is where we document how we do it — the Japan base camp, the tech we carry, the cards we use, the places we've stayed, and everything we've learned along the way.
Everything on our Gear page is something we've actually bought and used ourselves — we don't accept products for review, and if it broke or let us down, it isn't on the page. Same goes for the cards on Points & Miles: we've carried and used every one of them.
We're not travel hackers chasing the next signup bonus. We use a small, focused stack of credit cards to earn points consistently, and we redeem them strategically to make long-term travel genuinely affordable. It's not complicated — but it does take a little intention.
Depending on what brought you here, here's where we'd point you first:
Curious about our Japan base? Buying a second home and car, the visa loop and exploring Hokkaido. Want to see how we stay connected? The router, VPN, phone plans, insurance and our apps. New to points & miles? It's the engine behind everything. Want the full picture? Real experiences from the road.Question about something we've written, a gear recommendation, or just want to say hi?
